…Nine days before his death Immanuel Kant was visited by his physician. Old, ill and nearly blind, he rose from his chair and stood trembling with weakness and muttering unintelligible words. Finally his faithful companion realized that he would not sit down again until the visitor had taken a seat. This he did, and Kant then permitted himself to be helped to his chair and , after having regained some of his strength, said, ‘Das Gefühl für humanität hat mich noch nicht verlassen,’ –‘The sense of humanity has not yet left me.’ The two men moved almost to tears. …
「伊馬紐爾‧康德過世前九天,他的醫生過來看他。老邁,有病在身,眼睛差不多已經瞎掉的康德,虛弱不堪,危危顫顫的從椅子上站起來,嘴裡結結巴巴不知道說些甚麼。他就那樣站在那裏;他那忠實的伙伴後來才理解原來他要等他坐下,他才肯坐下。醫生連忙坐下;康德這才讓人協助他坐下來。等到恢復了一點力氣之後,他說了一句話:‘Das Gefühl für humanität hat mich noch nicht verlassen,’ ----「人文精神還沒有離開我身上。」兩個人感動得幾乎要掉下眼淚...。
